Research

Much research is underway that highlights the limitations of artificially isolating the history of a given place, person, issue or phenomenon without adequate investigation and analysis of links with broader scale. Reflective of the scope of the lives of people, places and the history of phenomena, whether of agriculture, medicine, science, art, architecture, language, sports and much else, history as also archaeology demonstrates movement of people, ideas, trade and much else, including diplomacy that requires acknowledgement and celebration. The Romans were not only present in Italy and Britain but traded in person on the west coast of India. People from India travelled to China and vice-versa. People from lands to the north of China migrated into Alaska and thence are thought to have populated the Americas. Those from Polynesia migrated to New Zealand and those who settled across Europe several thousand years ago had migrated from other places, bringing agriculture with them. Appreciation of this broader history and its dynamism contributes much knowledge and understanding to the history of any place, person, theme and phenomenon in history and the present-day. Many publications of World Heritage Books focus on this issue for which large-scale and nuanced research which has been undertaken for many years and is ongoing provides fresh perspectives of past and present in landmark publications. The planned excavation trench system sought is expected to be larger scale than has hitherto been undertaken in Britain for which a range of innovative systems are being devised which will contribute to knowledge and understanding. The Philosophy of History

Constituting the foundational volume of a multivolume series about the interaction of cultures and civilizations in history, The Philosophy of History (divided into 2 volumes) is presently in its final stages of preparation before its publication. Part I (vol. 1) is due to be published in early 2026 and Part II (vol. 2) later in the same year. At over 400,000 words in total (both volumes), this work examines how history has been formulated over the millennia from prehistoric times, a period rarely engaged with in relation to historical thought, to the present-day. New avenues of inquiry and new insights of subject matter and issues identified and examined are provided as the author sheds valuable light on the approaches of a large body of historians and others. Seldom have this variety of historians from the ancient world to the modern era and from so many different cultures and civilizations been addressed in a single study (albeit across 2 volumes) and never in relation to the focus of this work. Intellectual history, the sociology of knowledge, proximity relations, cosmopolitan history of the author, including the translation of culture, fraternity and chains of knowledge (ChoK), are addressed and contribute to knowledge and understanding.

A vast scale of human experience and direction is outlined and explored in this well referenced study that introduces the subject of the interaction of cultures and civilizations and the cosmopolitan history approach of the author and its relevance that is extended to the subsequent volumes via studies of particular issues. Identifying and addressing gaps in knowledge and understanding, this significant publication will be of interest to those who teach and study history at all levels in addition to people of diverse backgrounds across society and the world. Photographing cultural heritage

Despite the digital photography age, photography remains an activity that requires much care and thought. What is the subject of the photograph, is there adequate light, is the camera able to produce sharp images of high resolution, how useful are atmospheric elements, the number of photographs to take are amongst the many issues that photographers must consider and address. As overwhelmingly stationary objects, cultural heritage that is photographed can be studied and, in many cases, photographed from different angles and distances. Precision, effort and skill, in addition to knowledge of the site or object is needed to achieve strong results. World Heritage Books commissions photography of heritage sites and cultural heritage objects whilst also obtaining license agreements, rights and permission to use photographs by other persons and parties. A range of images by the director of WHB and thence by other photographers will be available on this website in due course as also information relevant to taking photographs of heritage sites and objects in different conditions.
