In addressing in substantive nuance the interaction of people of different cultures and civilizations in history, the journal examines the very specific phenomena of the translation of culture. Why and how this has taken place and its manifold implications are assessed. The journal focusses on a very notable, though hugely absent or underrepresented aspect of the human story, often buried beneath the scaffolding of various forms of narrative advanced in recent history. A key characteristic of the ebb and flow of culture and civilization, people from different lands and backgrounds who have interacted via trade, diplomacy, knowledge, medicine, science, art, farming and other contexts have learned from one another whether concerning language, attire, food, knowledge and ideas, technology and much else. Whether due to lack of adequate knowledge, understanding, scientific base or other factors, including also language barrier, in some cases, the visitor may not have fully grasped the scope and nature of the persons, places and phenomena viewed and interacted with or has influenced its description with personal input and bias. Consequently, the translation may not be a complete or effective one, though conversely may, as a result of adding to the phenomena viewed and experienced once returning home, generate a new form or meaning and application that enriches local culture, civilization, life and experience. The role of the intermediary in translating phenomena and manifestations of culture and civilization from one place and people to another is highly relevant to this subject. Clothing, styles, furnishing, art, buildings, institutions, sports, protocols of state, language, knowledge and ideas and many other human activities, cultural, social, economic and other themes of history have been impacted by translation of culture that has continued in a given place over time as people continuously impact on these and other phenomena and are impacted by them. The journal both explores and analyses subtle and substantive phenomena, dynamism, vehicles and impact of change, whilst also critically evaluating the limitations of sources, theory, paradigms, published studies and teaching of the past concerning these issues.
