Less evident in many scholarly books in recent years, though present in many academic journals, the footnote has played a notable role in many academic and scholarly publications during the past few centuries. Very famous books and studies that have shaped minds, disciplines and specialisms and many other publications that have made their mark at different scales have made extensive use of footnotes as part of their convention, organisation and presentation. Footnotes, therefore, have played a central role in scholarly endeavours and publications and have been used by students across the world in their studies. Providing vital means of reference and, therefore, of transparency and a subtext that affords the reader the means to access supplemental information on the same page as the principal text, the footnote has demonstrated its vital role whilst also adding to the visual presentation of studies and publications. In addressing a relatively underrepresented subject, this work provides insight into the history, role, impact and significance of footnotes. Contribution is made to knowledge and understanding of this salient subject in the history of writing, communication and expression, studies, literature, publications and culture.
